Hi, I'm Emma

Hello, I’m Emma, the lady behind the camera. I’m a York based fine art photographer who specialises in wedding and family portraiture. When I’m not taking snaps, I love to spend my days exploring new places in the great outdoors with my little girl. My favourite place to be is outside either in a pretty woodland or summer meadow if I’m lucky enough to spy one! My perfect day would be spent picking wild flowers or strawberries with my daughter before heading home to bake something delicious like brownies!

Where my love of photography began

One of my fondest childhood memories was sitting on my grandma’s knee in front of a roaring fire peeling back page after page of the family photo album. I remember wondering who all these people could be with super sideburns and fluffy perms (even though they did strike some familial resemblance). The curious leather album overflowed with memories – some silly, some big occasions but all so dear. In their own unique way, they have become the greatest family heirlooms. I wonder if this was one of the early moments in my life which steered me towards becoming a photographer? Nevertheless, my journey gathered pace back in 2014 when I got engaged and started searching for my dream photographer to capture our perfect day.

The days of searching paid off by leading me to discover fine art photography. I instantly fell in love with the soft pastel tones, considered shots and the romantic feel which the style portrays. I was hooked. I knew this was the style of photography I wanted for our big day, but also it made me want to create, learn and ultimately kick-start my new career as a family and wedding photographer.

September 2017

2014

Over the next two years, I assisted the industry’s leading photographers alongside my day job of being a product designer. I learnt my craft, went to workshops across the UK and started to hone my photographic style.

September 2016

I launched Little Sixpence Photography and captured my first solo wedding. I will always remember my clients review of, “Wow, Emma! We will treasure these photographs forever!”. I had certainly caught the photography bug!

April 2017

I launched family sessions as a new client offering and captured my first session at Thorpe Perrow Aboretum with three very excited boys and their parents. I loved every minute and since then have captured timeless memories for over 400 families in and around Yorkshire.

I was commissioned by Little Green Rascals Organic Day Nursery to photograph all of their children across six sites in my signature natural style. Five years later, I have delivered thousands of beautifully considered photographs to their families across North Yorkshire.

February 2020

I became a mum myself to Ella and truly understood first-hand how fleeting childhood really is. It only seems moments ago I held her tiny hand in mine for the very first time, and now she’s a happy, playful three-year-old who brings joy to whoever she meets. Ella shows me there is joy to be had in every moment and that the time right now needs cherishing.

February 2022

Work began in my garden to build a photography studio especially for newborns and Mum’s-to-be. The vision was to deliver simplistic and heartfelt photographs in a modern and highly considered way whilst welcoming young families into a safe and relaxed environment.

May 2022

I welcomed my first family into the studio and loved every minute!

June 2022

I rebranded from Little Sixpence Photography to Emma Raye Photography to add a more personal touch to my brand name.

Here’s to capturing rays of sunshine!

"Emma's mastery of light and keen eye married with her natural friendliness make photoshoots stress-free, knowing Emma will successfully capture the magic."
